The Law Society’s 2023 Financial Benchmarking Survey is here.

Produced for over 20 years by the Law Society’s Law Management Section, the survey is widely recognised as the annual financial health check for law firms; enabling them to benchmark results against a wide range of other law firms and objectively test their internal perceptions against their peers.

The survey is now open, and those that take part before Friday 30 September will receive a free personalised report for their firm and be entered into a prize draw to win a hamper of goods.

The survey should take approximately 45 minutes to complete and should be emailed to the Law Society’s partner Hazlewoods at benchmarking@hazlewoods.co.uk.

As specialists in law firm finances, Hazlewoods will collect and analyse the data on behalf of the Law Society. All data is kept securely and reported at an aggregated level to ensure firm anonymity.

You can find more information about the benefits of participating in the Financial Benchmarking Survey here.

Let's be clear, quiet quitting isn't new. But it has a new name, and its prevalence is rising. Staff still hold the power in a candidate-led market. So this is about how you respond to their demands.

Quiet quitting isn’t a performance issue

The intention isn't slowing businesses down. Rather, employees are exerting control over their work-life balance and not worrying about putting in extra. They're choosing health and family as their top priorities and aren't concerned with going above and beyond. They want to meet requirements, do their job, and switch off.

So quiet quitting isn't about slacking. This isn't a performance issue. Instead, it's delivering projects in defined hours, before stepping away and muting notifications. Going above and beyond doesn't motivate them anymore. But unfortunately, many businesses are built expecting goodwill. And that means a change in approach.

Lessons from quiet quitters

Employees want a work environment where they can thrive. Valued contributions with home life protected. They come to work to deliver projects, but only within the scope of their role. The challenge for leaders is to help the business continue to provide great products and services. But without relying on unpaid overtime or implicit expectations of people working longer days.

We’ve outlined the five key areas to review in a more detailed blog. It’ll help show your quiet quitters that you hear them and understand their concerns. It covers:

  1. What quiet quitting teaches you about Performance Management
  2. How flexible working could mitigate quiet quitting
  3. Why management development is a key lesson from quiet quitting
  4. What quiet quitting teaches you about talent management
  5. How quiet quitters influence resource management and administrative processes
