Back for its first outing since the last Manchester Day was held pre-Covid in 2019, the spotlight for this year’s big return of the city’s much-loved free event will be fixed firmly on children and young people.

On Sunday 19 June, the Manchester Day Parade will weave its way through the city centre in a riot of colour, sound and spectacle.

The Parade starts at 1pm and travels along Deansgate towards Exchange Square, before heading down Cross Street and John Dalton Street, then back down Deansgate.

This year’s parade will feature a very special guest in the form of Little Amal, a 3.5 metre puppet. Little Amal is a Syrian refugee who arrived in the city last year after a 8,000km walk on foot from Turkey through 65 European cities, towns and villages.

Having made Manchester her home in late 2021, Little Amal will be out and about exploring her city on Sunday 19 June and will join the Manchester Day Parade in a spectacular fashion.

The Parade has been created by Manchester City Council in collaboration with youth and community groups across Manchester, along with outdoor arts specialists, Walk the Plank.

Manchester Day is a completely free, family friendly event. There will be special pop up events across the city centre on the day from 11am – 5pm, including live entertainment, free family activities, youth markets and street food.

The Law Society are partnering with Net Zero Now to develop a protocol for the legal sector on setting and implementing net zero strategies.

As part of this project, the Law Society are looking for law firms to take part in the Net Zero Now legal sector pilot. Participating firms will be given free access to the Net Zero Now platform where they can add their data, receive their emissions report, a tailored reductions plan and start their journey to net zero. The platform is versatile and provides users with various data input options. The pilot project will help inform Net Zero Now on exactly what data should be captured in the legal sector.

The pilot will take users through each of the steps outlined in the protocol, from calculating their carbon footprint through to reduction commitments and certification.

Law firm requirements

  • The Law Society are looking for small to medium sized law firms only (<1000 employees)
  • UK only
  • Can cover any type of law (e.g. corporate, family, litigation, etc.)

The Law Society are aiming to complete the pilot stage by the end of July 2022.

MLS Advantage

Lightning does, sadly, sometimes strike twice in the same place. That was certainly so in the case of a teenager whose congenital disabilities were greatly worsened by a devastating childhood bout of meningitis.

The girl had a heart defect and developmental delay but was progressing well before she contracted the infection at the age of seven. Due to a delay in her treatment, both her legs had to be partially amputated. She also lost some of her fingers. After a clinical negligence claim was launched, the NHS trust that bore responsibility for her care swiftly admitted liability in full.

The trust’s chief executive had written to the girl and her family expressing profound apologies for the shortcomings in her care. A comprehensive review of the case had been carried out and hard questions had been asked and answered with a view to avoiding similar incidents in future. Glowing tribute was paid on all sides to the courage shown by the girl and her family, particularly her mother.

Following negotiations, the trust agreed to settle the girl’s claim for a gross lump sum of £6,925,000 together with annual, index-linked, six-figure payments to cover the costs of her care for life. In approving the settlement, the High Court noted that no amount of money could turn the clock back. The outcome of the case meant, however, that the girl would always receive high-quality care and that she and her family could face the future with some confidence.
